Journaling through Anger

Do you ever feel like you are walking around with so much anger inside you feel sure you just might implode at any moment?

If that’s true, I don’t think you’re alone. Anger is a warning sign that you’ve got to work through some things and maybe you need to pause, let some emotion out and reflect on what is really going on inside, not the surface stuff, but the deep down stuff.

Here are some journal prompts for you to use next time you feel overcome with anger.

Come to me….

“Are you weary, carrying a heavy burden? Come to me. I will refresh your life, for I am your oasis. Simply join your life with mine. Learn my ways and you’ll discover that I’m gentle, humble, easy to please. You will find refreshment and rest in me. For all that I require of you will be pleasant and easy to bear.”

Matthew 11:28-30

  1. God, why am I so angry right now? Take a minute to really sit with this question and consider the events of the past few hours/days. Often our anger, which is a secondary emotion, shows up as a result of unprocessed pain. It builds up to a breaking point until we are about to explode. Ask Him to show you what is really happening when you don’t know how to answer this. He will help you identify whatever you need to process through.

  2. God, am I walking in victimhood right now? If so, show me your perspective on my life and my circumstances. Spoiler alert, victimhood mentality is straight from the enemy. Victory is from God, and it is always His plan. When we are in Christ, victory is ours by divine right.

  3. God, would you show me a picture right now of where I am choosing to stand in the battleground of my life? - Maybe you are a visual person, maybe not, but however you usually “hear” from God, give Him space to speak truth into your circumstance. If you struggle to connect with God in this way, I highly recommend listening to this podcast episode. Be sure to stay until the end and walk through the exercise of hearing from God.

  4. God, where are YOU in this picture? Let Him show you where He is, because He IS there, whether you feel it or not. He promises never to leave us or forsake us.

  5. Is there an alternate reality or different perspective you can offer me? How do YOU see this battleground? This will be highly personal, but let the Holy Spirit minister to you and infuse a kingdom perspective into your circumstance. Often God will give me a very detailed picture at this point. I always want to write this out in as much detail as possible so I can refer back to these treasured prophetic pictures.

  6. God, is there anything you want me to surrender in this moment? This is a question I ask God often. I often see a picture of an object that I know represents something I’m carrying. I will visualize myself laying it at His feet or placing it in His hand.

  7. In place of what I’m surrendering, do you have a gift for me? Don’t leave until you see a picture or hear a word, because He will have something for you and there will be meaning behind it. Sometimes I don’t understand the gift or picture he shows me. I write it down anyway, because I know at some point in the future, He will make it clear.

I look up to the mountains and hills, longing for God’s help.

But then I realize that our true help and protection

is only from the Lord,

our Creator who made the heavens and the earth.

He will guard and guide me, never letting me stumble or fall.

God is my keeper; he will never forget nor ignore me.

Psalm 121: 1-3
